The Scholarship

Unlike many of the stories you hear about those after whom scholarships are named, John J. Crowder, Fenwick class of 1981’s story was not the stuff of a storybook.  John was a guy with a troubled soul, a huge and loyal heart, and an intellect to match.  However it was that troubled soul that won for many years after leaving Fenwick. Just as things seemed to be picking up for John he was murdered protecting the woman to whom he was engaged.

Ten years ago a few of us got together and we wanted to do something special in John’s memory, something that we could all remember him by and something that would benefit other children, giving someone the chance who deserved a great Fenwick education but whose family could not financially afford it.

We came up with the idea of holding a fundraiser dedicated in John’s name.

Going on our 10th year, we have awarded 13 scholarships to some very determined and dedicated students. To date with the great support of our Fenwick alumni, families and friends, we have raised over $120,000 in money to distribute direct to Fenwick for scholarship money. Each recipient is hand-picked by our board with the assistance of Fenwick staff.

Again, not the stuff of storybooks, but it is the loyal heart and big intellect that most of us who knew John remember most.  The Crowder Scholarship committee has been approved by Fenwick and is now a 501 3c non-profit organization, and will continue to utilize all of the funds raised to help with tuition for those students in need.

Just like last year, the students will be selected from those who submit an essay that is designed to identify a person who exhibits the best of the characteristics John exhibited.

I hope you will consider getting a group together to spend an evening at the races, have some fun, and support a good cause.
